To make it even more astonishing, the Minneapolis storm you mention hit another area besides the church serving the convention.
“[Police Chief] Dolan believes a single tornado touched down then skipped into the downtown area near the convention center. He says the worst damage is in an area about five blocks wide and a mile long along the Portland Avenue corridor south of downtown.”
According to MPR NEWS reporting on that same storm “Some of the worst damage from the storm that hit Minneapolis today is in the neighborhood of 35th and Portland, south of downtown near Powderhorn Park”.
I live in the Twin Cities and personally work with a lesbian couple who lost almost everything in that storm. I did a quick search and this is what I found on http://www.outhistory.org :
“Queer women undoubtedly settled in the Powderhorn park area shortly after this apartment construction. (see also: Foxy's Bar) ….By the 1970s, the park served as the locus of a separatist “Lesbian” district, one that stood at odds with the “Gay Ghetto” in Loring Park. In 1982, Powderhorn was the site of a “Lesbian” Twin Cities Pride Festival.”
Thank you Joseph for exposing a very clear warning that hit close to home!
