I was reading through some of my older writings today and I came across thiswriting from 2009. Although it is 15 years old, I found it interesting as I have been watching some videos on Giants on earth. Of course, I was looking for some videos that were largely Biblically based, and I would mention one of them to you.

Many Christians do not realize there are numerous families of giants named in the scripture. In looking over this writing, I came across numerous quotations from the book of Enoch. The book of Enoch is mentioned in numerous places in scriptures, though the book is not included in the Bible, it may contain parts of truth that are taken from the original book. However, I would not base any scripture teachings on it. I would consider it as far as adding a possibility of man’s history from far back.

Such history has always intrigued me. I am not a believer in evolution. To see what I do believe I would recommend the book Foundations.

Nephilim
Genesis 6:4
The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.

Nephilim – Hebrew nephiyl from naphal, a primitive root meaning “to fall.” Young’s Concordance and Bible renders nephilim in Genesis 6:4 as “fallen ones.”

Another Scripture relating the ancient history of man speaks of the wars fought against these giants. These wars occurred after the flood in the time of Abraham.

Genesis 14:5-7
In the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the kings that were with him came and attacked the Rephaim in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzim in Ham, the Emim in Shaveh Kiriathaim, and the Horites in their mountain of Seir, as far as El Paran, which is by the wilderness.

We have to look to other Scriptures to identify these kingdoms as giants and Nephilim (fallen ones). Following is the only other occurrence of the word nephilim in Scripture. It speaks of the time the twelve spies went into Canaan to look over the land and the report they brought back.

Numbers 13:33
And there we saw the Nephilim, sons of Anak, of the Nephilim; and we are in our own eyes as grasshoppers; and so we were in their eyes.’

We can conclude from this passage that the Anak, or Anakim, were also Nephilim. The following passage speaks of several races of giant peoples who once lived in the land of Canaan, or nearby Canaan. Each race of giants mentioned was destroyed by another people who were helped by God, or dispossessed from their land. We find many of the same names repeated here that were mentioned in Genesis chapter 14.

Deuteronomy 2:19-23
And when you come opposite the sons of Ammon, do not harass them nor provoke them, for I will not give you any of the land of the sons of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to the sons of Lot as a possession.’ (It is also regarded as the land of the Rephaim (Giants), for Rephaim (Giants) formerly lived in it, but the Ammonites call them Zamzummin, a people as great, numerous, and tall as the Anakim, but Yahweh destroyed them before them. And they dispossessed them and settled in their place, just as He did for the sons of Esau, who live in Seir, when He destroyed the Horites from before them; and they dispossessed them, and settled in their place even to this day. And the Avvim, who lived in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorim who came from Caphtor, destroyed them and lived in their place.)

Esau was the brother of Jacob, and he settled in Mount Seir. This verse reveals that God helped Esau and his descendants by destroying a race of giants called the Horites from before them.

We also read of the Caphtorim who settled as far as Gaza. The Caphtorim were the forebears of the Philistines, and they too destroyed a race of giants in order to take possession of the land. The race of giants they dispossessed were called Avvim. Some of these giants remained in the land of the Philistines, and we read more of them in the day of David.

I Samuel 17:4-7
And a champion went out of the camp of the Philistines named Goliath of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span [almost ten feet]. And he had a bronze helmet on his head and wore a coat of mail, and the coat weighed 5,000 shekels of bronze. He had bronze shin armor on his legs and a bronze javelin across his shoulders. And the shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam; his spear’s head weighed 600 shekels of iron. And a shield bearer went before him.

The Moabites also dispossessed a race of giants that they called Emim.

Deuteronomy 2:10-11
The Emims dwelt therein in times past, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; which also were accounted giants, as the Anakims; but the Moabites call them Emims.

Also of these giants among the Philistines in the day of David we read the following:

II Samuel 21:15-22
The Philistines had war again with Israel. And David went down and his servants with him and fought against the Philistines, and David became faint. Ishbi-benob, who was of the sons of the giants (Rephaim), the weight of whose spear was 300 shekels of bronze, was girded with a new sword, and thought to kill David. But Abishai son of Zeruiah came to David’s aid, and smote and killed the Philistine. Then David’s men charged him, “You shall no more go out with us to battle, lest you quench the lamp of Israel.” After this, there was again war with the Philistines at Gob (Gezer). Then Sibbecai the Hushathite slew Saph (Sippai), who was a descendant of the giant (Rephaim). There was again war at Gob with the Philistines, and Elhanan son of Jaare-oregim, a Bethlehemite, slew Goliath the Gittite, whose spear shaft was like a weaver’s beam. And there was again war at Gath, where there was a man of great stature who had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot, twenty-four in number; he also was a descendant of the giants (Rephaim). And when he defied Israel, Jonathan son of Shimei, brother of David, slew him. These four were descended from the giant (Rephaim) in Gath, and they fell by the hands of David and his servants.

We see then that the Nephilim (fallen ones) were giants that arose from the cohabitation of fallen angels with women. The Anakim are declared to be from among the Nephilim. Also the Rephaim (Giants), whom the Ammonites called Zamzummin, were described as being just like the Anakim, who were Nephilim. And a number of other races of giants are named. The complete list is as follows:

Nephilim (fallen ones)
Rephaim (commonly translated “giants” – possibly meant “dead ones,” in the sense that they were the aboriginal people of the land who had been dispossessed or slain.)
Anakim (one translation – “the long-necked ones”)
Zuzim
Zamzuzim (Name the Ammonites called the Anakim)
Emim (Moabite name for Anakim – possibly meant “the fearful ones”)
Horites
Avvim

Og, king of Bashan, whom the Israelites slew when they went in to possess the land of Canaan, was a giant of the land of the Ammonites.

Deuteronomy 3:11
For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of the [gigantic] Rephaim. Behold, his bedstead was of iron; is it not in Rabbah of the Ammonites? Nine cubits was its length and four cubits its breadth, using the cubit of a man [the forearm to the end of the middle finger].

The non-canonical Book of Enoch includes the following quotation regarding the transgression of the fallen angels in having intercourse with women.

And it came to pass when the children of men had multiplied that in those days were born unto them beautiful and comely daughters. And the angels, the children of the heaven, saw and lusted after them, and said to one another: ‘Come, let us choose us wives from among the children of men and beget us children.’ And Semjaza, who was their leader, said unto them: ‘I fear ye will not indeed agree to do this deed, and I alone shall have to pay the penalty of a great sin.’ And they all answered him and said: ‘Let us all swear an oath, and all bind ourselves by mutual imprecations not to abandon this plan but to do this thing.’ Then sware they all together and bound themselves by mutual imprecations upon it. And they were in all two hundred; who descended in the days of Jared on the summit of Mount Hermon, and they called it Mount Hermon, because they had sworn and bound themselves by mutual imprecations upon it…
And all the others together with them took unto themselves wives, and each chose for himself one, and they began to go in unto them and to defile themselves with them, and they taught them charms and enchantments, and the cutting of roots, and made them acquainted with plants. And they became pregnant, and they bare great giants…

We read further of the judgment that befell the angelic beings that transgressed, as well as their offspring in chapters 7 through 10 of the Book of Enoch. The angels were judged both for passing on forbidden knowledge to mankind, as well as for raising up offspring through the daughters of men.

And Azazel taught men to make swords, and knives, and shields, and breastplates, and made known to them the metals of the earth and the art of working them, and bracelets, and ornaments, and the use of antimony, and the beautifying of the eyelids, and all kinds of costly stones, and all colouring tinctures. And there arose much godlessness, and they committed fornication, and they were led astray, and became corrupt in all their ways. Semjaza taught enchantments, and root-cuttings, ‘Armaros the resolving of enchantments, Baraqijal (taught) astrology, Kokabel the constellations, Ezeqeel the knowledge of the clouds, Araqiel the signs of the earth, Shamsiel the signs of the sun, and Sariel the course of the moon. And as men perished, they cried, and their cry went up to heaven…
And then Michael, Uriel, Raphael, and Gabriel looked down from heaven and saw much blood being shed upon the earth, and all lawlessness being wrought upon the earth. And they said one to another: ‘The earth made without inhabitant cries the voice of their crying rises up to the gates of heaven. And now to you, the holy ones of heaven, the souls of men make their suit, saying, “Bring our cause before the Most High.”‘ And they said to the Lord of the ages: ‘Lord of lords, God of gods, King of kings, and God of the ages, the throne of Thy glory (standeth) unto all the generations of the ages, and Thy name holy and glorious and blessed unto all the ages! Thou hast made all things, and power over all things hast Thou: and all things are naked and open in Thy sight, and Thou seest all things, and nothing can hide itself from Thee. Thou seest what Azazel hath done, who hath taught all unrighteousness on earth and revealed the eternal secrets which were (preserved) in heaven, which men were striving to learn: And Semjaza, to whom Thou hast given authority to bear rule over his associates. And they have gone to the daughters of men upon the earth, and have slept with the women, and have defiled themselves, and revealed to them all kinds of sins. And the women have borne giants, and the whole earth has thereby been filled with blood and unrighteousness. And now, behold, the souls of those who have died are crying and making their suit to the gates of heaven, and their lamentations have ascended: and cannot cease because of the lawless deeds which are wrought on the earth. And Thou knowest all things before they come to pass, and Thou seest these things and Thou dost suffer them, and Thou dost not say to us what we are to do to them in regard to these.’
Then said the Most High, the Holy and Great One spake, and sent Uriel to the son of Lamech, and said to him: Go to Noah and tell him in my name “Hide thyself!” and reveal to him the end that is approaching: that the whole earth will be destroyed, and a deluge is about to come upon the whole earth, and will destroy all that is on it. And now instruct him that he may escape and his seed may be preserved for all the generations of the world. And again the Lord said to Raphael: Bind Azazel hand and foot, and cast him into the darkness… And on the day of the great judgement he shall be cast into the fire. And heal the earth which the angels have corrupted, and proclaim the healing of the earth, that they may heal the plague, and that all the children of men may not perish through all the secret things that the Watchers have disclosed and have taught their sons. And the whole earth has been corrupted through the works that were taught by Azazel: to him ascribe all sin. And to Gabriel said the Lord: Proceed against the bastards and the reprobates, and against the children of fornication: and destroy [the children of fornication and] the children of the Watchers from amongst men [and cause them to go forth]: send them one against the other that they may destroy each other in battle: for length of days shall they not have.

Although the Book of Enoch is not included in the canon of Scripture, it is quoted in the Scriptures as having some authority. How much of the book is accurate is open to examination and is much debated. We do find Jude, the brother of Christ and of James, citing this book.

Jude 14-15
And about these also Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord came with many thousands of His holy ones, to execute judgment upon all, and to convict all the ungodly of all their ungodly deeds which they have done in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.”

Jude speaks of Enoch prophesying, and this word of prophecy is found in I Enoch 1:9.
